I would call him a hero if he only exposed the surveillance programs on US citizens, but he didn’t. He gave our fucking SIGINT operations away to the Chinese and Russians, all while making himself out to be some sort of super hacker espionage agent. He was a sysadmin that used social engineering to get access to shit he should not have had access to, and then gave the information away to foreign entities under the auspices of freedom and looking out for the average US citizen.

Gary Johnson and Jill Stein both support pardoning Snowden

At what point did ‘treason’ get changed to ‘whistle blower’?
When you sign the Official Secrets ACT (or whatever the U.S. Calls theirs), you don’t pick and choose what is and isn’t secret and tell everybody because you want to be hailed a hero for civic liberties, etc...

If you want to jail Snowden, I hope you also support jailing everyone involved in these illegal spying programs. As it sits no one, not even people have intentionally abused these programs for personal reasons has gone to jail.

Does he want to come back to the U.S. or does he just not want to risk extradition if he travels places? If he’s not coming back, whatever.

The fact is truth is the first casualty in any war, and for good reason.
“War on Terror” counts, in my books. Apart from any of the global squabbles it appears the general North American (Yeah, I’m including Canada. We seem to love the isolationist policy too) public would rather pretend they don’t know about.

However, when you sign an agreement that requires you to accept an order to gas the Jews... that doesn’t mean that you’re allowed to gas the Jews. The Nuremberg defense does not work.
Arguably, NOT blowing the whistle would be giving aid and comfort to enemies of the American people, and that would be treason.

Data gathering and storage (spying) is a world away from genocide.

Even if he were to get the pardon, what’s stopping any three letter agency from putting a bullet in his skull?

I think the Chelsea Manning one is even more shocking in that regard. It doesn’t excuse the (admittedly well-intentioned) release of classified info, but seriously why does a low ranking soldier even have access to such a vast and wide ranging set of classified information? Seems like there was zero compartmentalization, or any sort of monitoring for suspicious access patterns. To say nothing of the fact that given her known mental health issues and desire to leave the Army, she shouldn’t have been granted a security clearance in the first place.

Why wasn't the download a two-man lift? It is now. Simple, obvious safeguards were not in place, or were not enforced. People should hang for that while the likes of Manning and Snowden are left to live out their lives in exile and ignominy and incarceration.
